Accidents and spillage happen in every home, and whilst we are here to support you with all your carpet cleaning, care needs and advice, there are a couple of things you can do to protect your carpet.

Cleaning

A handmade rug can be cleaned many times and yet offer an excellent durability and last a lifetime. However the life of the rug highly depends on usage and traffic. We recommend to wash the carpets that are in the high traffic zones at least once every 18 months.

There are also a few things you can do when you encounter any sudden spillage or strains.  In such instances, always assess the stained area and depending on the type of stain, you can treat them with a mixture of luke warm water and a few drops of soft soap or vinegar (where necessary). It would be best to consider drying the area or blot it with an absorbent cloth (never rub or scrub).

You can also try using a hard spoon to take the excess water/ wetness away with a piece of cloth placed next to it. This will reduce the chances of the spillage spreading to the other areas. Once completed leave a bowl or a small bucket over night underneath the carpet to let the air flow. We highly recommend not to use inappropriate detergents on carpets or upholstery, i.e: washing up liquid, wash powders, household bleach, disinfectants.

Fading

Our rugs have been made with the highest quality dyes that has been used for centuries by the masters of this craft. If the carpets are left overtime under the sun, the dyes will fade a little. This is a desirable effect specially when the colours are found to be too sharp. However, if you want to avoid fading, and give your carpet a uniform effect when exposed to the sun light in an area, try rotating it from time to time so that all the corners would get the same level of fading.

Fluff

Almost every rug sheds a bit of fluff specially when they are new. This is commonly due to either the excess fluff getting stock in between the fibres from the warehousing or fluff not being correctly pulled in the yarn by the yarn spinner. Regular vacuuming should address this over time.

Threads that are loose

Abrash

Loose threads can almost be found in any hand-made carpets and are easily resolved. They could be caused by combination of factors, such as:
  • The knots that have missed the warp or may have come undone.
  • Or by threads that have protruded over the time that may not have been cut to the desired height.

Depending on the case, you can either pull the loose threads gently or in the case of height, trim it to make it even height with the rest of threads.

Abrash mainly describes the slight stripe effect in the hand-made carpet's threads. This desirable effect provides each carpet with a unique identity and character. Abrash is caused mainly as a result of the inconsistency in the colour or the thickness of the hand made yarn.

This effect is also one of the key difference between a hand-made vs. a machine-made carpet. As the yarns prepared by hands of our craftsmen is not always consistent in thickness or colour.
